Things aren't always what they beam

Take a gander at the image above.  That soffit running across the room is about 3.5 feet wide and yields a clearance of about 6' 6", roughly 4" above my head.  Since this was in the middle of the room, I wanted to reroute the ductwork carried inside the soffit to open the space up a bit more.

I invited my friend Todd over to take a look at my options.  Here they are:

1. Don't move anything.
2. Refer to option 1.

I'll take option 1, please.

It turns out the soffit did house the ductwork, as I suspected, but it also encases the support beams for the dining room and kitchen above. So the soffit stays, and I stop wondering if it can moved.  Problem solved!

  2. Actually, can you thin out that beam's width and match that beam in other locations, you know, make it look intentional like some kind of old school ceiling decorations?
