Aspect Ratio
Most people are chosing 16:9 aspect ratio these days. 100% of HDTV and about 60% of movies are in 16:9 aspect ratio. The other 40% of movies are in 2.40:1 ratio, which gives you the wider, more movie-like aspect ratio.
There are other ratios, but these two are the most popular.
Screen Size
Screen size has to be considered in any home theater setup. Ideally, if you are viewing 1080p content, your seating needs to be 1.2 times away from your screen's width. At 720p, that goes up to 1.5 times. I don't have an issue in my space, so any size is fine.
The Samples
Here are some sizes and aspect ratios for you to ponder. Keep in mind that I will have bookcases under the soffit on the right to make the space symmetrical. (click the images to enlarge)

Not bad, I like the 16:9, it's a bit smaller though...

16:9 is nice, but it starting to look too big for the space, may be the best option for this aspect ration

Look OUT!

Nice fit! Not so standard aspect ratio at 2.35, but it fills the space. No room for trim or lighting here either.

Here's 2.40. It fits the area really well! No room for trim or lighting here either!

Another 2.40 aspect. The screen is smaller, but does it fit better? Room for trim, maybe some lighting.

Select a standard ratio, not a non standard one or you will probably kick yourself.
ReplyDeleteCan't you use rope lighting around trim at the edges to get you some ambient lighting? I don't necessarily think you need large wall lights attached next to the screen (and if you did they would be off as you watched the screen)
